Director

Prof Markotter is a renowned transdisciplinary research leader, holding the Future Africa Research Chair in People, Health and Places (One Health). She also serves as Director of the Centre for Viral Zoonoses in UP’s Faculty of Health Sciences and holds the DSI-NRF South African Research Chair in Infectious Diseases of Animals (Zoonoses). Her research focuses on understanding bat pathogens and preventing disease spillover.

Internationally recognized, Prof Markotter was appointed in 2021 as Co-Chair of the One Health High-Level Expert Panel, advising global bodies including the WHO, WOAH, FAO, and UNEP.

Her leadership will ensure continuity and momentum in Future Africa’s mission to foster transformative, transdisciplinary collaboration across the continent.
